ONE STOP SOLUTION FOR ALL MY NUTRITIONAL NEEDS

My Nutri-Myths - Common Myths Related to Nutrition

1. MYTH: FAT PEOPLE ARE HEALTHY PEOPLE

FACT: No. This is one of the most common fallacies regarding weight in our country where people consider a fat person as healthy. The truth is that Obesity is a disease and being overweight is an indication of poor health. Excess fat in our body leads to various lifestyle diseases such as heart diseases, high blood pressure, abdominal hernias, varicose veins, and gall stones among others. Body weight is the key indicator of good health.

The fitness mantra is - maintain an ideal body weight with a balanced diet and a regular exercise routine.

2. MYTH: COOKING VEGGIES KILLS ALL NUTRIENTS

FACT: It all depends on the method of cooking. While it is true that cooking causes veggies to lose some vitamin C (which is water soluble), it actually makes other antioxidants like beta carotene (in carrots, pumpkin, papaya, turnips) and lycopene(a powerful antioxidant present in Tomatoes) more easily available.

Hence the best way to get the most of nutrients is to cook some of the veggies and eat some raw. Do not throw away the water in which the veggies are boiled. Better way to preserve the nutrients, is to cook the vegetables in their own juices or steam them.

3. MYTH: CUTTING DOWN MY SLEEP HELPS ME FINISH MORE WORK

FACT: Compromising on the sleep hours is never a good option for productivity. You need 7-8 hours of sleep daily or else your health will suffer. Follow these simple tips to catch up your daily sleep:

• Plan your day ahead, leaving the room for 7-8 hours of sleep

• Establish a bed time and adhere to it

• Stay away from coffee or tea at least four hours before retiring to bed, as they stimulate the nervous system and keep you awake

• Set your commitments systematically so that your body is disciplined as per the biological clock

• A glass of warm milk contains the amino acid Tryptophan which induces sleep.

4. MYTH: LOSING MORE THAN 20 STRANDS IN A DAY WILL MAKE YOU BALD FALSE.

FACT: False. Hair loss is a natural process. Losing 20-100 hair strands a day is normal. You don’t go bald because you are shedding hair. You go bald only when fallen hair is not replaced with new hair. No medicine can stop hair fall. You can improve total hair volume by eating healthy, reducing stress and using quality products.

Eat a balanced healthy diet rich in greens, salads, sprouts, pulses, curds, mushrooms and fruits to make your hair lustrous and strong.

5. WEIGHT MYTHS REVEALED

1) BEING OVERWEIGHT IS BAD FOR YOUR HEALTH

FACT: Being underweight is just as bad for health as being overweight. Yo-Yo dieting (recurrent cycle of weight gain and weight loss) is worse for the body, than being large and staying large.

2) MYTH: I CAN EFFECTIVELY LOSE WEIGHT IF I CUT CALORIES IN THE DIET

FACT: Researches have proved that cutting calories to less than 1200 kcal can deprive the body of necessary vitamins and minerals. Moreover, if you are not going to get enough calories, there is a possibility of binge eating later on. It is always better to have adequate calories and opt for a healthier weight loss programme.

3) MYTH: ANYONE CAN BE SLIM – IT TAKES JUST A BIT OF SELF CONTROL IN DIET

FACT: Dieting is not the magic bullet that solves all of the weight problems. Typically dieters come back to their original weight once they stop dieting. Everyone has a “set point” and putting your body through alternate periods of starvation and gluttony actually pushes the set point farther up.

6. DARK CHOCOLATE IS UNHEALTHY FOR THE HEART

FACT: No. A study in the Journal of the American Medical Association suggests ‘A small daily bite of dark chocolate, rich in chemical substances known as polyphenols may slightly lower your blood pressure, without causing weight gain or any other adverse effects.’

The antioxidants present in dark bitter chocolate (with 75-80% cocoa) plays the primary role in reducing the blood pressure and protects the arteries from free radical damage, thereby reducing the blood pressure in pre-hypertensive and hypertensive patients.
